Men, speak up: Increasing awareness on prostate cancer

The alarming fact that needs to be told is that 1 in every 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer sometime in his lifetime. The problem is that, while prostate cancer is actually one of the most common types of cancer in men, it is hardly talked about. Many men are likely to avoid the topic even when they talk to their doctors during routine check-ups.

Through On the Line, a prostate cancer awareness and education campaign, experts have sought the assistance of some celebrities and athletes to convince more men to talk about the disease and to encourage them to take charge of their own health. The important part of this discourse, of course, is that prostate cancer, when detected early, has a better chance of successful treatment.

Edge Health and Entertainment
, an entertainment and branding entity focused on health care, contributed to this national campaign on cancer awareness with its own support campaigns. Early in 2012, it came up with the Big Daddy Awards, which was the first-ever online awards show designed to honor the 70 million Fathers in America and to raise awareness and funds for research on prostate cancer and treatment.

Indeed, fathers have more to live for. They have to take care of their bodies so that they can continue to be present in the lives of their partners and their children. Cancer is a big game changer. Thus, all men must be prepared to face it squarely or else they risk losing the whole game.
